No. Otago Medicine does not require any paid UCAT prep, and all the official UCAT ANZ practice material is free. For 2027 entry, Otago used UCAT as a threshold and gave the score no further weight once you cleared it; the thresholds for 2028 entry are not published yet.
Is paid UCAT prep worth it for Otago?
Start with the admissions rule before you buy anything. For 2027 Medicine entry, Otago required domestic Health Sciences First Year and Graduate applicants to score at or above the 20th percentile in Verbal Reasoning and the 10th percentile in Situational Judgement. Once an applicant met those thresholds, UCAT played no further part in selection. The Otago Medicine page says the thresholds are set each year, so check the values again when Otago publishes them for 2028 entry.
Otago says it does not recommend paying external providers, advises students to be wary of their claims, and points Medicine applicants to the free UCAT ANZ material. The UCAT ANZ FAQ says the Consortium endorses no commercial provider, that courses can be very expensive, and that you should be sceptical about their claims. Cutline sells UCAT practice, so that warning covers us too. Under the 2027 entry rule, a score above the line earned nothing extra, so no course could buy you an advantage past it.
Use the official free resources first: the Tour Tutorial, the question tutorials, the question banks and the practice tests. The practice tests show answers and explanations, though they don't give a score. Our guide to the official material sets out an order to use them in. Review your errors properly before deciding whether you need more questions at all.
When might paid UCAT practice help?
Extra timed sets can help once you have worked through the official questions and still want repetition in one section. A clear explanation of a mistake you keep making is useful too. Judge any offer on what it adds to your practice, its price, its cancellation terms and whether it follows the current ANZ format. Ignore claims that a platform can predict your score or secure you an offer.
If you are also applying to an Australian programme, check that programme's own selection rules, because Otago's threshold-only use doesn't describe them. Auckland Medicine has dropped UCAT for 2028 entry, so a student applying only to Auckland that year doesn't need UCAT prep for that application.
Cutline offers timed UCAT practice by subtest. Try the official route first, then decide whether more timed sets would help you. We can't promise a score improvement, and nobody knows the Otago thresholds for 2028 entry until Otago publishes them. UCAT ANZ 2027 is sat in July 2027 for 2028 entry, and our UCAT ANZ 2027 guide covers who needs to sit it.

Yes. The official preparation resources on ucat.edu.au, including the practice tests and question banks, are free.
Will a higher UCAT score improve my Otago Medicine rank?

If you have used the free material and want more timed sets, see how Cutline UCAT practice works before deciding to pay.
Cutline is not affiliated with or endorsed by the UCAT ANZ Consortium or the University of Otago. UCAT is used here only to describe the test. Official information checked 14 October 2026. Check ucat.edu.au for the 2027 cycle when it is published.
