    Graduate entry questions

Can you get into Medicine in New Zealand after a degree?

Yes. The University of Otago admits graduates to the MBChB through its Graduate category: you need a first degree completed within three years of applying, you sit UCAT ANZ in the year of application, and after the UCAT screen you are ranked on weighted GPA alone, with no interview. The University of Auckland also admits graduates, and from 2028 entry it selects on a Multiple Mini Interview and CASPer with a GPA of 6.0 (B+) as the minimum.

How does the Otago MBChB graduate category work?

UCAT ANZ is used as a screen, then ranking is on weighted GPA alone. There is no interview for the Graduate category. In the 2026 cycle, applications for the Health Sciences professional programmes were open from 1 July to 13 August 2026.

How does Otago BDS graduate entry work?

Dentistry has no UCAT requirement. Applicants are interviewed by Zoom in late September or early October, and the weighted academic score is the final deciding factor for anyone who meets the admission criteria. Second year BDS places are shared between the Health Sciences First Year, Graduate and Alternative categories, with as near as possible to 70% going to the first year category and the balance to Graduate and Alternative combined.

What is Otago's new weighted GPA method?

Your best 300 level papers are selected first, up to 120 points. Your best 100 and 200 level papers are then pooled and selected by grade up to 240 points, to reach 360 points in total. The weights are 0.5 for 100 level, 1.0 for 200 level and 1.5 for 300 level, and the ceiling is 9.00. Cut offs from before the change are not comparable. From 2027 entry, Pre-Christmas Summer School papers taken in the year of application are not included in the weighted GPA.

    Do graduates need UCAT ANZ?

For Otago Medicine, yes: UCAT ANZ is sat in the year of application and used as a screen before ranking. For Otago Dentistry, no. For Auckland from 2028 entry, no: MMI and CASPer replace UCAT.

What about graduate medicine in Australia and GAMSAT?

Domestic applicants to the ten GEMSAS graduate entry medical schools (ANU, Deakin, Griffith, Macquarie, Melbourne, Notre Dame Fremantle and Sydney, UQ, UWA and Wollongong) apply through GEMSAS. GAMSAT sits in March and September each year, and registration for the March 2027 sitting opens in November 2026. For example, the UWA Doctor of Dental Medicine asks domestic applicants for a selection GPA of at least 5.5 and a GAMSAT overall score of at least 55 with no section under 50.

How is Auckland MBChB changing from 2028?

From 2028 entry, Auckland selects on a Multiple Mini Interview and a situational judgement test, CASPer, replacing UCAT, with a GPA of 6.0 (B+) as the minimum hurdle. People already applying for 2027 entry keep the existing criteria. From 2026 Auckland's MMIs move to an asynchronous, pre-recorded question format.

How many graduate offers does Otago make?

In the 2025 cycle, General subcategory, Otago made 24 MBChB Graduate category offers and 20 were accepted; the lowest weighted GPA that got an offer was 8.66 and the lowest that got a waitlist offer was 8.15. For the BDS, fewer than five offers were made and 57 people were interviewed. Otago withholds exact counts under five.
