We know a physio who has been practising for 10 years. They still regret not doing graduate entry Medicine.
That regret is the question a lot of people carry into their late twenties and thirties: is it too late to become a doctor in NZ? Age turns out to matter less than timing. The schools care about when you finished your degree and which category that puts you in, and the categories close on schedules you can look up.
Is it too late to become a doctor in NZ at 30?
We looked for age limits and age data. Otago's Medicine and Auckland's MBChB entry requirements, as published, don't set an upper age limit. Waikato's graduate school pages don't mention one either. Otago's Admissions Statistics 2026 report gives applications, offers, score ranges and admissions, but not ages. We couldn't find any official figure for how old graduate entrants are, so we won't guess one.
Time does change which door is open to you. Otago's and Auckland's graduate rules both depend on how long ago you finished your degree.
Which route is open, by how long ago you finished
| Your situation | Otago | Auckland (2028 entry) | Waikato (from 2028) |
|---|---|---|---|
| In the final year of your first degree | Graduate category, applying in your final year | Graduate entry, with final results by 30 November | Eligible to apply in your final year (indicative) |
| First degree finished up to three years ago | Graduate category | Graduate entry, if completed normally in the minimum time with a GPA of 6.0 | Bachelor's with a B average (indicative) |
| Three to five years ago | Alternative category | Graduate entry, same conditions | Same as above |
| More than five years ago | Alternative category | Only within five years of a degree, postgraduate degree or diploma: ask Auckland about your case | No time limit published so far |

Otago's Graduate category: three years
Otago counts your first university degree as the qualifying degree, and you have to apply within three years of completing it. Repeat applications inside that window are allowed. Because the rule is tied to your first degree, check with AskOtago before you start a second degree in the hope of reopening the window.
Otago's Alternative category: for later
The Alternative category is Otago's route for domestic applicants who aren't eligible for any other category. You need a New Zealand degree, a master's or doctorate, an overseas degree completed at least three years before applying, or relevant health professional experience. For allied health professionals, Otago recommends at least five years in the profession, with two of them in New Zealand preferred. Selection is holistic, shortlisted applicants are interviewed on Zoom, and the interview topics include your commitment to a career change. You can apply through it once, between 1 April and 1 May, and there's no UCAT.
It's competitive. In the general pathway, Otago received 105 Alternative applications for the 2026 intake and made 18 offers, according to its statistics report. Up to 10 percent of Medicine places go to this category.
Auckland: five years
From 2028 entry, Auckland's graduate route needs a degree, postgraduate degree or postgraduate diploma from a New Zealand university, completed normally in the minimum time and no more than five years before you apply, with a GPA of 6.0. After that gate, you're ranked on an MMI and Casper, half each. You can apply once for each qualifying programme.
Waikato: no recency rule published
Waikato says graduates from any field with a B average can apply, alongside a GAMSAT score of at least 50 overall with no section under 50. Its published requirements are indicative until accreditation, and it hasn't published a limit on how old your degree can be. Our Waikato Medical School post covers what's confirmed.
How long the training takes
At Otago, graduates join the MB ChB in second year, and the degree takes five years from there. At Auckland, graduates start at Part II of a six-year programme, with first-year courses added if they're missing them. Waikato's MD runs for four years. Registration and specialist training follow in each case, and those vary by specialty.
Work out your own numbers. Add the years to your age today and ask yourself if you'd still want this at that age. If the answer is yes, the total matters less than finding the door that's open to you now.
Do this instead: find your door this year
- Find the date you completed your first degree. That one date decides your Otago category.
- Check your GPA against Auckland's 6.0. Then check if you finished in the minimum time and within five years.
- Check Waikato's GAMSAT dates. For the 2028 intake, the March 2027 test is the last one that counts, and registrations close in January 2027.
- If you're a health professional with five or more years in practice, read Otago's Alternative category rules in full, and prepare for an interview about your career change.
- Pick the earliest door that's open and plan backwards from its closing date.
If you're in another programme now and wondering whether to leave it, read switching to Medicine from another degree you don't want. Dentistry has its own graduate rules, covered in how Otago's BDS graduate category works. The three schools side by side are in our complete guide to graduate entry Medicine in NZ.
Ten years in, the physio's regret is about the route they didn't take. If you're still asking the question, the route is still there, and the categories tell you which version of it you can use.
FAQ
Is there an age limit for Medicine in New Zealand?
Otago's and Auckland's published entry requirements don't set an upper age limit, and Waikato's pages don't mention one. The limits that matter are time limits on your degree.
Can I start Medicine at 30 in NZ?
Yes, if you meet a category's rules. With a recent degree you can use the graduate routes. With an older one, Otago's Alternative category or Waikato may fit.
How many older students get into Medicine in NZ?
We couldn't find any published figure. Otago's admissions statistics don't report age, so treat any number you see online with caution.
