Can you get into Medicine after Physio, Pharmacy or Nursing in NZ?

You're a few years into physio, pharmacy or nursing. You work alongside doctors most weeks, and the thought that you could have been one keeps coming back. Medicine after physiotherapy in NZ, or the switch from pharmacy to Medicine, is possible, and the route depends on two dates: when you finished your first degree, and how long you've worked in your profession.

The rules differ a lot between Otago, Auckland and Waikato, and a health degree changes which ones apply to you.

Can you do Medicine after physiotherapy in NZ?

Yes, physio, pharmacy and nursing graduates can apply through the same graduate routes as other graduates, and experienced health professionals have an extra route at Otago. Timing decides which one fits you.

If you graduated in the last few years: the graduate routes

Otago

Otago's Graduate category takes your first university degree as the qualifying degree, and you must apply within three years of completing it, according to its Medicine guidelines for admission. If your physio, pharmacy or nursing degree was your first degree, it's the one Otago ranks you on. You also need a UCAT ANZ result from the year you apply. Otago gives no preference to degree or major, so a health degree earns no extra credit, and your grades do the work.

Two points to check with AskOtago. Otago's published weighted GPA example uses a standard three-year degree, and we couldn't confirm how it treats 400 level papers in a four-year professional degree. And if you're missing any of the seven HSFY papers or their equivalents, Otago may set you a prescribed course: you complete the missing papers first, and your Medicine place is deferred a year while you do.

Auckland

From 2028 entry, Auckland's graduate route needs a degree, postgraduate degree or postgraduate diploma from a New Zealand university, completed normally in the minimum time and within five years of applying, with a GPA of 6.0 (B+), according to its MBChB entry requirements. Applicants at 6.0 or above are offered an MMI, and final ranking is MMI 50 percent and Casper 50 percent. Depending on your degree, Auckland may ask you to complete some of its first-year courses before you start Part II.

Waikato

Waikato's graduate school opens in 2028 and says graduates from any field with a B average can apply, alongside a GAMSAT score of at least 50 overall with no section under 50. Its GAMSAT page says the test can't be waived for work experience or a health background. The wider requirements are indicative until accreditation.

Pharmacy to Medicine after years in practice: Otago's Alternative category

The Alternative category is Otago's route for domestic applicants who aren't eligible for any other category. One way in is health-related professional experience. Otago considers allied health professions regulated under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act, and the Ministry of Health's list of responsible authorities includes the Nursing Council, the Pharmacy Council and the Physiotherapy Board. Otago recommends at least five years in your profession, with two of them in New Zealand preferred.

Applications run from 1 April to 1 May, there's no UCAT, and you can apply through the category once. Otago shortlists on your academic record, a one-page statement and your CV, then interviews shortlisted applicants on Zoom. Interview topics include your commitment to a career change, your knowledge of the New Zealand health system and your understanding of the profession. Up to 10 percent of Medicine places go to this category, and in the general pathway Otago made 18 offers from 105 Alternative applications for the 2026 intake, according to its Admissions Statistics 2026 report.

Otago's Dentistry programme has a similar Alternative category, with the same five-year recommendation for health professionals.

Nursing: check where your degree came from

Otago's Graduate category and Auckland's graduate entry both ask for a degree from a New Zealand university. If your nursing degree came from a polytechnic or another provider that isn't a university, ask Otago and Auckland whether it qualifies before you plan around it. The Alternative category at Otago is open to registered nurses with relevant experience, and Waikato's indicative rules ask for a bachelor's qualification with a B average.

What your clinical experience is worth

It depends on the route. In Otago's Graduate category, you're ranked on your weighted GPA, so your years on a ward or in a clinic don't add points. At Auckland, your experience gives you real material for the MMI and for Casper's scenarios, which make up the whole final ranking. In Otago's Alternative category, the interview asks about your career change and the health system, so your experience sits at the centre of your application.

Do this instead: work out your route this month

  1. Find the completion date of your first degree. It decides if Otago's Graduate category is still open to you.
  2. Get your transcript and GPA. Check it against Auckland's 6.0, and ask Otago how its weighted GPA would treat your degree.
  3. Count your years in practice. Five or more puts Otago's Alternative category within its recommendation.
  4. Pick your tests. The UCAT ANZ for Otago's Graduate category, Casper for Auckland, the GAMSAT for Waikato, none for Otago's Alternative category.

FAQ

Can a pharmacist become a doctor in NZ?

Yes, through more than one route. A recent pharmacy graduate can use the graduate routes at Otago, Auckland and Waikato. An experienced pharmacist can also apply through Otago's Alternative category, where Otago recommends at least five years in the profession.

Do I need the UCAT if I'm a physio applying to Medicine?

For Otago's Graduate category, yes, from the year you apply. Otago's Alternative category doesn't use the UCAT, Auckland uses Casper from 2028 entry, and Waikato uses the GAMSAT.

Does clinical experience help me get into Medicine?

Not in Otago's Graduate category, which ranks on grades. It helps in Auckland's MMI and Casper and in Otago's Alternative category interview.
