UCAT PlaybookChapter 7 of 8
Your mistakes
A wrong answer is not information until it has a name. Careless is not a name. This chapter is the whole method, free, and it works on any set you have ever done, in any app or on paper.

Why doing more questions stops working
The first few hundred questions teach you the format, and your score climbs. Then it flattens, because the same handful of mistakes keeps happening and you cannot see them. You read some as all in Verbal. You divide by the new number instead of the old one. You take a could for a must. Each one feels like a one off. Together they add up to a lot of lost marks.
The fix is not more questions. It is fewer mistakes, which means naming the mistake, then practising the exact thing that stops it.
The method, in four steps
- 1
Miss one
Do a timed set. Do not look anything up during it. Afterwards, go through every wrong answer and every lucky guess, not only the ones you feel bad about.
- 2
Name the trap
For each miss, pick the trap that caught you. Use the names in chapters 1 to 4: Qualifier slip, Could read as must, Wrong base, Safety missed, and the rest. If none fits, write a new one in three words. Never write careless.
- 3
Write your rule
One line, in your own words, that would have saved you. Find the qualifier in both places first. Point at the of before I divide. Keep every rule on one sheet, your pitfall sheet, and read it before every set.
- 4
Dodge it three times
When a trap does not catch you three times in a row on questions you have not seen before, cross it off. If it catches you again later, it comes back. The sheet gets shorter, and your score goes up for a reason you can name.
Running it on paper
Rule a sheet into three columns: trap, my rule, dodges. After each set, add a row for each new trap and a tick for each dodge. Three ticks and you draw a line through the row. That is the whole system. It takes five minutes after a set.
Also mark a miss you were sure about. Those are blind spots, and they matter more than a guess that went wrong, because a blind spot will happen again on test day without warning.
What the app does with it
In Cutline UCAT this loop runs on its own. Almost every wrong answer in a set or a trainer is tagged with one of 37 traps, with a picture of why: the deciding line lit up, the Venn redrawn, the working shown, the scale marked. A miss you were sure about counts as a blind spot. The Train tab shows your top three traps with a Fix button each, and the trainer drills that one trap on new questions. Three clean dodges, in time and not guessed, retire it, and your accuracy on that trap for the 30 days before and after stays on the board.
The method is the same on paper. The app just never forgets to run it.
In Cutline UCAT this happens on its own: almost every miss gets its trap, the Train tab says Fix qualifier slip, and the trap retires after three clean, in-time dodges.
