UCAT PlaybookChapter 8 of 8

Scores and where they get you

Three cognitive subtests are added into one total. Situational Judgement stands alone. What a number means depends entirely on which university is reading it.

How the score is built

Each of Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning is marked on the number of correct answers, with no negative marking, and converted to a scaled score from 300 to 900. The three are added into the cognitive total, from 900 to 2,700. Situational Judgement gets its own scaled score from 300 to 900 and is reported separately.

Your results show in your Pearson account within 24 hours of the test, and universities get them in early September. A result counts for one admissions cycle only: a 2026 result is for entry in 2027.

The 2026 percentile thresholds

The score you needed to reach each national percentile in 2026. A 2,120 total, for example, sat at the 70th percentile.

What each university asks for

From the checked university pages, with sources. Rules change each cycle, so check the page for the year you apply.

  • University of Otago

Domestic HSFY and Graduate applicants need UCAT from the application year in all four domains. AskOtago says all domestic and international medicine applicants must sit UCAT from 2028. For 2027 entry, general applicants need VR at or above the 20th percentile and SJT at or above the 10th percentile. UCAT has no further weight after these thresholds. Thresholds for other domains may be applied later.

  • University of Auckland

UCAT counts for 2027 medicine entry; Casper replaces it for 2028 entry in both First Year and Graduate categories. 2027 final ranking: core GPA 60%, UCAT 15%, MMI 25%; graduates use cumulative GPA. For 2028: MMI 50%, with a minimum threshold, and Casper 50%. UCAT for 2027 entry and Casper for 2028 entry must each be sat in the application year.

  • Monash University

Required for direct-entry medicine at Clayton. SJT only breaks ties between equal UCAT total scores. Final selection uses equal thirds: ATAR aggregate with adjustments, UCAT total and MMI. December interviews rank UCAT total only. January interview rounds use ATAR aggregate and UCAT total equally.

  • UNSW Sydney

Required for general medicine entry. UCAT minimum: 50th percentile for general, Gateway and Lateral entry; 40th for REAP. SJT is excluded. General interview invitations use selection rank and UCAT overall score separately, without averaging. REAP invitations use the UCAT cut-off and rural eligibility, with academic results reviewed later.

  • University of Queensland

Required for provisional medicine entry, the direct-entry BMedSc/MD and Dental Science. Provisional medicine interviews rank the aggregate of VR, DM and QR. Ties use SJT, then VR. Final offers combine ATAR, MMI and UCAT aggregate.

  • Western Sydney University

Required for medicine. UCAT sets the interview cut-off, with possible weighting of individual sections. The cut-off is not published; Greater Western Sydney applicants may have a lower cut-off. Offers use 25% UCAT and 75% interview after the academic threshold is met.

  • Adelaide University

Required for general entry to Medicine, Dental Surgery and Oral Health. Medicine interview eligibility gives VR, DM and QR equal weight; SJT breaks ties among lower-ranked applicants with equal totals. Medicine offers use UCAT 20%, interview 40% and academic score 40%.

  • Curtin University

UCAT ANZ and Casper are required in the application year. Interview ranking uses ATAR, Casper and cognitive UCAT total in the ratio 35:35:30. Final offers use ATAR, UCAT and MMI in the ratio 40:20:40.

Thinking about a resit

A UCAT result is valid for one admissions cycle, so a 2026 score cannot be carried into a later application. You can sit once per cycle, and a new sitting gives you a new result.

Before deciding, run the trap method over your last few sets. If your misses cluster on two or three named traps, you have something specific to train before a resit. If they are spread evenly, there is no quick fix, and the time may be better spent on grades or the interview, depending on where you are applying.

Cutline UCAT runs this for you: nearly 1,000 questions on a screen like the real test, almost every miss named, and the Train tab drilling your top traps until they retire.
