UCAT weighting at Australian medical schools runs from a big share of the final rank down to a tie-break. For 2027 entry, with UCAT sat in 2026, UQ provisional Medicine gave cognitive UCAT 25 percent of the final score, Monash made it one of three equal parts, and UTAS used it only to separate applicants on the same ATAR. UCAT ANZ 2027 is the sitting for 2028 entry, and almost no university has published its 2028 weightings, so treat the 2027 formulas as a guide to how selection works.
What is the UCAT weighting at Australian medical schools?
A percentage means little until you know the stage. A university can use UCAT to pick interview invitations and then give it a different share of the final offer rank, and some require the test without publishing any final weight. The table covers the main domestic routes into Medicine for 2027 entry (test sat in 2026). Dental courses and separate Indigenous routes aren't in it.
Here is how UCAT fed into each stage of each medical school's 2027 entry selection.
| Medical course | UCAT before interview | Final UCAT weight | Other final parts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monash direct entry | December interviews on UCAT alone | One third | ATAR, MMI equal thirds |
| UQ provisional MD | Cognitive total shortlist | 25% | ATAR 25%, MMI 50% |
| CQU to UQ MD | UCAT shortlist | 25% | ATAR 25%, MMI 50% |
| UniSQ to UQ MD | First three sections | 25% | ATAR 25%, MMI 50% |
| Western Sydney MD | Unpublished threshold | 25% | Interview 75% |
| Adelaide Medicine | UCAT rank alone | 20% | Academic 40%, interview 40% |
| Curtin MBBS | 30% of shortlist score | 20% | ATAR 40%, MMI 40% |
| UWA assured MD | UCAT invitations | 20% | ATAR 30%, MMI 50% |
| Flinders Medicine | No interview | 10% | Year 12 results 90% |
| UTAS Medicine | No interview | Tie-break only | ATAR rank first |
| Griffith, UniSC Medical Science | No interview | Optional tie-break | ATAR band first |
| UNSW, JMP, Charles Sturt | Used for interview selection | Not published | See each course page |

Curtin's shortlist mixed ATAR, Casper and UCAT "in the ratio of 35:35:30" for 2027 entry, and its final 20 percent UCAT share came after the interview. If you only read the shortlist ratio, you'd overrate UCAT's part in offers. Monash's December interviews were picked on UCAT total alone, and the final rank split three ways. Our Monash cut-off guide keeps those stages apart.
Which schools require UCAT but do not publish a weight?
UNSW ranked General applicants on academic results and UCAT together for interviews in 2027 entry, then used academic results, UCAT and the interview for the final domestic rank. It says the scores aren't averaged and publishes no percentage formula. Its 50th percentile General and 40th percentile Rural minimums (test sat in 2026) are eligibility rules, separate from any weighting. The UNSW guide explains them.
The Newcastle and UNE Joint Medical Program ranked applicants for its assessment on Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning, and published no final UCAT weight or cut-off for 2027 entry. Charles Sturt Medicine used UCAT to pick interview candidates and said the level "will not be disclosed", with no published final formula either. A prep company's estimate can't stand in for either missing number. Our JMP guide covers that program's separate application.
Western Sydney published 75 percent interview and 25 percent UCAT for offers in 2027 entry. Its interview threshold isn't based on your overall UCAT score, may weight individual sections, and isn't made public. Knowing a final weight doesn't give you the interview cut-off.
What does a UCAT tie-break or optional test mean?
UTAS ranked domestic school leavers on ATAR and used the three cognitive UCAT sections to order applicants on the same ATAR, for 2027 entry. It ran no interview for main entry and published no domestic UCAT minimum. Griffith and UniSC Medical Science made UCAT optional for their school-leaver pathways to the Griffith MD, and applicants without it were "ranked at the bottom of their ATAR band". Optional still mattered whenever ATARs tied: for 2026 entry, Griffith's Gold Coast campus used a UCAT tie-break of 2240 (test sat in 2025) among applicants on ATAR 99.90.
Flinders had no interview for its standard school-leaver Clinical Sciences and Medicine route. For 2027 entry it ranked on Year 12 subject results at 90 percent and a UCAT-derived score at 10 percent, using all four subtests including SJT. The SJT guide shows how that compares with schools that leave SJT out or use it only for ties.
How do rural and dental routes alter the formula?
UWA's rural MD formula for 2027 entry set ATAR at 22.5 percent, interview at 37.5 percent, UCAT at 15 percent and rurality at 25 percent. If you're a rural applicant, the general 20 percent UCAT share isn't your number. The rural guide compares other universities' quotas and eligibility rules.
Dental courses need their own reading. UQ Dental ranked all four UCAT sections, while UQ Medicine used three and kept SJT for ties. Griffith Dental used 20 percent UCAT, 40 percent interview and 40 percent academic results for 2027 entry. The dentistry guide covers those courses together.
How should I use a 2027 entry formula for 2028 planning?
Use it to see which stage UCAT decides at each school on your list, then wait for the 2028 page before treating it as your rule. Full 2028 selection formulas hadn't been released when I checked. The Australia guide lists application routes next to test use. Start practice with the free official resources and the Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning pages.
I'm an Otago med student and sat the same test. Cutline is NZ-based, and these Australian formulas come straight from the universities' own pages. The score calculator adds up your cognitive subtests; it can't model a shortlist algorithm a university keeps private, or the next cohort's offer rank.
What else do applicants ask?
Does a 25 percent UCAT weight mean a 25 percent interview chance?
No. It's the UCAT share of the final rank in the named 2027 entry formulas. Interview invitations can rest on a separate UCAT screen.
Did UNSW publish a UCAT final weight?
No. For 2027 entry it named the inputs to selection and published eligibility minimums, with no percentage formula.
Is a 2027 weighting confirmed for 2028 entry?
No. The 2028 rules for the test sat in 2027 will appear on each university's updated page.

Cutline is NZ-based and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the UCAT ANZ Consortium or the universities in the table. UCAT is used here only to describe the test. University information checked 14 October 2026. Check official pages for 2028 entry rules when published.
